Ferdinand Kontze

Ferdinand Kontze, son of Charles David Kontzie and Barbara Elizabeth (Kaiser) was born in 1851. Ferdinand was a fisherman in Port Bruce, Ontario ( map), along the shore of Lake Erie for ten years before taking up sculling. In his pursuit of becoming a leading professional sculler, Ferdinand appeared in match races, including one mentioned in 1880 in the local newspaper of nearby Vienna with M. Ward of London. A couple of decades later, in 1901, Ferdinand went to Dawson City, in the Yukon Territory. He went there to take up his third occupation, a Gold Miner, at Dawson City. He moved to California later in life. Ferdinand lived at least into his mid 80's.

Christian Frederick Kontzie

Christian Frederick Kontzie, the second son of Charles David Kontzie and Barbara Elizabeth (Kaiser) was born on March 28, 1852 in Copenhagen, Ontario. Christian, commonly known as Frederick, married Jane Anderson Drysdale on February 15, 1882 in the Township of Malahide, County of Elgin, Province of Ontario. Frederick was living in Copenhagen, Ontario and Jane had lived near Dunboyne, Ontario, both of which were in the Township of Malahide. They had three sons; Charles William, Edwin John, and Theodore.

Frederick and Jane created a homestead in the Chesterfield district of southwestern Manitoba ( map, southeast of Melita and north of Dalny) in 1884 and began farming. Frederick, along with his sons Charles and Edwin each purchased a quarter section (160 acres) of land in the Municipality of Arthur some time before 1930. The land they bought was Section 4, Township 3, Range 26, Meridian W1. Frederick purchased the Northeast quarter; Charles, the Northwest; and Edwin the Southwest. The Northeast quarter is likely where Frederick and Jane originally settled. This homestead is no longer owned by the Kontzie family. There is still an old house atop the hill at the homestead, but it may not be their original home.

Christian Frederick died in 1933, a few days short of 81 years. He died in the Deloraine Memorial Hospital from acute Bronchitis, just one day after being admitted. Frederick was buried in the family plot at Melita Cemetary.
